Writing from a Sense of Place – at Chawton House Library

Learn to Make your Location Show, not Tell, your story

with

Author Lisa Clifford

The Elizabethan Manor house, now known as Chawton House Library was once the home of Jane Austen’s fortunate brother, Edward, who was adopted by his Uncle in order to keep the “Great House” within the family.

The connection with one of the UK’s best-loved Authors makes this elegant home a perfect spot for Writers to meet and consider elements of writing.

We are privileged to be able to use the dining room in the Great House at Chawton for our studies.

Author Lisa Clifford, who runs the popular Art of Writing Writers retreat in Tuscany, shares her experience of writing using your surroundings and senses to show, rather than tell, your story.

As part of the programme, you will be given an opportunity to view, make notes and take photos of the house and gardens which might help you get a sense of your location.

After lunch, this workshop will also provide some discussion and exercises to help to consolidate your learning.

We aim to finish about 4pm to give you time to also visit The Jane Austen Museum, whilst you are in the area.

The cost for the day, which includes tuition fees, the tour of the house, coffee breaks, lunch, notebook and pen will be £70.
