When philanderer diplomat Piccolomini accepted the Papacy he also set about transforming not only his own home but the entire town of Pienza in which he lived.
Amongst the changes to his Villa was the addition of an integral garden – open to the views outside the town. The only part left unchanged were some ancient pillars, which were left in situ to emphasise his families historic roots.
Strategic placement of a German “Keep out” notice left the building relatively unscathed by all the opposing armed forces when Pienza became part of the Front during the Second World War.
When he became Pope Pious and had the money to make all his Urban Improvements Piccolomini ensured that the populace knew where the money had come from with his Mitre, Keys and Family Crest plastered all over the Cathedral
