Yes I have to confess I am not in Florence – or any other part of Italy this month !

We are on a road trip in Australia having enjoyed a city break with friends in Sydney we are now on our way -by car- to Uluru

The driving is great, virtually empty roads with only the odd Road truck coming in the opposite direction! The gigantic road rail trucks are something else too – the one pictured below seemed to be filled with crushed Outback motor road kill – and the driver was balanced a top of his cab desperately trying to get a mobile phone signal!

But we had hoped to see wild life as opposed to wild life dead! Poor Roos they need to wear proper headlights as clearly a quick graze by the road side is a dangerous decision! The only kangaroos we saw today were  dead – one huge red being torn apart by a massive eagle – some only recognisable by their huge bleached white -white bones and tiny black leather forepaws.

The red soil is as dusty as one can imagine – a distant lorry sending up a “Mad Max” plume of earth – whilst in other places the earth is blackened -presumably by some previous fire – and the trees have blackened trunks from which springs an improbable green regrowth.

Five hours on the road with only brush and dead animals to see might seem a bit boring but it was wonderful -where else could you drive for so long without a change of gear – we loved it – and now we are loving the opal mining town of Coober Pedy where our hotel bedroom, in an attempt to keep us cool, is underground.

There is even a change of scenery at Coober Pedy, a rash of limpet like pyramids stretch as far as the eye can  see – evidence of opal mining beneath the surface.

Coober Pedy - Opal Capital of the World

Looking forward to finally reaching Uluru tomorrow.x
