St Mary’s Church Fete – Twickenham
Maybe this is a story for The Florentine’s recent discussion about Culture Clash but less about a clash than just an amusing diversity between street dancing in the two countries – in this case Florence and Twickenham near London.
This morning after our run in Richmond Park my husband and I came upon a group of Morris Dancers – mummers from a bygone age who still haunt our street parties and entertain the locals – and I remembered the sweet Tango music and elegant dancers in Florence last weekend.
This event was part of the annual Village Fete organised by St Mary’s Church in Twickenham and the street was also full of flowers and market stalls somewhat similar to those in Via Santo Spirito.
Morris Dancing is all great fun to watch but difficult to take seriously with all their bells and ribbons and banging of sticks – in fact my husband suggested that if we really wanted to intimidate the New Zealand Rugby team when they perform the Haka at Twickenham we should send this troupe out onto the field to perform!
“Be afraid – be very afraid!”
