Luca Giordano (18 October 1634 – 3 January 1705) was an Italian late Baroque painter and printmaker in etching. Fluent and decorative, he worked successfully in Naples and Rome, Florence and Venice, before spending a decade in Spain – and to judge from this extraordinary self portrait like many a painter his eyesight seems to have succumbed to the effort of working against times and within budgets .
His speciality was curved ceilings, including the dome of Corsini Chapel of my local church in Florence the Chiesa del Carmine ,which he painted between 1682-83. He also painted the ceiling of Sala in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence,showing the creation of man in fresco in 1684-1686
It was one of his disciples who painted the ceiling of the Palazzo Cerevo in San Agata dei Goti where we are holding our Watercolour Workshop from 17-24th September – but we must count it a privilege to paint under such a ceiling!
