When we arrived at Sydney , early in February, our hosts Chris and Lyn Rex took us to the football match where we met some of their colleagues . I was really taken aback when one of them, called Jamie, looked at us agog and said “Strewth! I don’t think I know any Aussies who would want to do that !
This phrase did haunt me a bit until we were safely on the road , in a really comfortable automatic car, with powerful air-conditioning, an intermittent working radio , plenty of water and a few bananas! What more could one want for the open road ahead?
Strangely that requirement turned out to be “the Essential Neil Diamond, the Essential Cat Stephens and the Essential Billy Joel!! ” and Yes we sang along to the lot!!
And it was really lovely despite the fact the scenery rarely changed – a long road ahead and behind and brush grasses in tufts, burnt out trees and essentially desert stretching as far as the eye can see, and there was so little wild life and so much dead life!
Would I do it again? Probably not! It is a once in a lifetime trip, but I have to laugh when I think of my Bah Humbug Husband finding the end singalong of Crackling Rosie was “BAh, BAh, Bababah bAh BAh, BA, baba a, BA!! BA, Ba , BahBA, Baaaa!
Deep joy!
